How to Drink Whiskey: Neat, on the Rocks or with Water?

There is no single correct way. Neat whiskey shows you everything it has, a few drops of water open up the aromas, and ice suits younger, bolder bottles. The key is knowing what each approach does to the flavour.

When should you drink whiskey neat?

Neat whiskey at room temperature is the choice for older and pricier bottles: you get everything the distillery created, undiluted. The downside: with whiskeys of higher alcohol content (46 percent and up), the spirit can drown out the subtler notes. If a whiskey burns so much that you can taste nothing else, there is no shame in reaching for the water.

What does water do to whiskey?

A few drops of still, unchilled water set off a chemical reaction: aromatic compounds (chiefly guaiacol) rise towards the surface and the whiskey quite literally blossoms. Scientists at Linnaeus University even confirmed this with a study in 2017. The practical rules:

• add it drop by drop; you cannot take water back out
• at 40 percent strength, 2 or 3 drops suffice; with cask strength, a teaspoon is fine
• the water must be neutral, neither sparkling nor flavoured

Does ice ruin whiskey?

It does not ruin it, but it changes it. The cold mutes both the aromas and the burn, which is why ice suits younger blends and whiskeys destined for mixed drinks, while with an eighteen-year-old bottle it is a shame to put to sleep the very thing you paid for. If ice it is, make it one large cube or sphere: it melts more slowly and dilutes less than crushed ice.

And what about whiskey and cola?

There is no flavour police. Jameson with ginger ale, whiskey and cola, or an Irish Coffee are all legitimate ways to enjoy whiskey; just do not waste premium bottles on them. A proven rule of thumb: below 1,000 CZK a bottle, mix away; above that, drink it neat or with water.
