How to Choose a Cocktail When You Cannot Decide

The easiest way to choose a cocktail is to decide by taste: do you want something sour and refreshing, sweet, bitter, or strong and spirit-forward? Each category has a few proven classics to match.
Fancy something fresh and sour?
Citrus cocktails are the safest starting point. They refresh and never offend:
- Mojito: mint, lime and rum, light and fizzy
- Daiquiri: just rum, lime and sugar, the pure essence of rum
- Whiskey Sour: lemon sharpness softened by whiskey and syrup
In the mood for something sweet?
Sweeter drinks work as a liquid dessert and suit the end of the evening:
- Pina Colada: rum, coconut cream and pineapple
- Sex on the Beach: vodka, peach liqueur, orange and cranberry
- Baileys Coffee: cream liqueur in hot coffee
Not afraid of bitterness?
Bitter aperitifs wake up the appetite and are very much in fashion:
- Aperol Spritz: gently bitter, with prosecco bubbles
- Negroni: gin, Campari and vermouth in a 1 to 1 to 1 ratio, a recipe from Florence in 1919
- Americano: the Negroni's lighter forerunner, with soda in place of gin
Want to taste the spirit in full?
Strong cocktails let the spirit shine, ideal for whiskey lovers:
- Old Fashioned: whiskey, sugar and bitters, a cocktail in the original sense of the word
- Manhattan: whiskey and sweet vermouth, a New York gentleman from the 1870s
- Espresso Martini: vodka, coffee liqueur and espresso, Dick Bradsell's invention from the 1980s
Still undecided? Ask the bartender
Tell us two things: which base spirit you like, and whether you lean sour, sweet, bitter or strong. The rest is the bartender's job. At Little Island in Frydek-Mistek we mix over 30 cocktails, so we can hit almost any taste.
